Power System Analysis

Power System Analysis Studies

Simes & Rosch Engineering has extensive experience performing power systems analysis studies to confirm safe operation and protection of electrical equipment while allowing for maximum selectivity of over-current devices for better system reliability.

Studies include short circuit, protective device coordination, transient motor starting, load flow, and arc flash analysis.

All analysis is performed in accordance with applicable ANSI and IEEE standards including IEEE Std 242, Recommended Practice for Protection and Coordination of Industrial and Commercial Power Systems (the IEEE Buff Book), IEEE Std 399, Recommended Practice for Industrial and Commercial Power Systems Analysis (the IEEE Brown Book) and IEEE Std 1584-2004, IEEE Guide for Performing Arc-Flash Hazard Calculations.    Example projects include:

Jacksonville Arena, Jacksonville, Florida.  This study confirmed power system protection and coordination for this new $130M entertainment complex.

Citibank Card Campus, Jacksonville, Florida.  Provided engineering study for new $90M, 560,000 square foot complex including multiple 2,000KW generators and related paralleling gear.

Iluka Industries, Green Cove Springs FloridaPower systems analysis was performed for this 10MVA industrial plant spread out over 10 miles, including significant high and medium voltage distribution.

Millennium Specialty Chemical , Jacksonville, Florida.  Engineering study for 7.5 MVA industrial facility.  The project included arc flash analysis to minimize the available incidental energy per IEEE Std 1584-2004 and NFPA 70E, Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace.

Other significant studies include:

  • Central Energy Plant
    Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi
  • Federal Law Enforcement Training Center
    Brunswick, Georgia
  • Mac Papers

Coordinating time current curves for protective devices requires a delicate balance between selectivity, system protection, and safety. The requirement to minimize the incident arc flash energy while maintaining coordination has further complicated the situation. Simes & Rosch has the experience to provide optimum solutions that will protect personnel and equipment while ensuring maximum system uptime.
